Abstract of "Daughters of Ham" by Doreen Hazel

(in dutch 90 5263 213 8 isbn Narratio) theology from a Afro-European Womanist perspective

With this book I want to give a voice to black religious women in the Netherlands in Diaspora. I want to clarify the position we have in the midst of black and white women and men and also in the midst of black and white churches and their theology. The title of this book refer to the so called "Ham-theology" a theology which is part of the Western Christian inherits and what have had a great impact in the history of black people. What does all this mean for black people? What does it mean for them to see and experience the horrors of Christianity. It is their discovery that the question of justice is inherent to the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God is not interpreted as private property of the Christians, but as a promise to all people From this discovery a start can be made to dismantle the theology of the established churches . Over the centuries, this theology has become 'the house of the master', i.e. the house of the esta-blished order The insight that the truth of God does not coincide with the truth of the established order, makes way not only for dis-mantling a theology that considered black people to be inferi-or, but also to develop a different way altogether of practi-sing theology. An example can be found in womanist theology. This theology chooses on the one hand to depart from Christian tradition, but on the other it does not deny that black people originally stem from a very different religious tradition. Being a womanist theologian, I can't get around the matter of contextuality. If, for example, the question of God's existen-ce is being posed, I suppose that the significance of both questions and answers is determined by the context. The woma-nist context is determined by the fact that we are women, that we are black, and are endowed with a traditional inheritance from the black African community. Being a woman and being black deter-mines the sup-pressed position we are in. Liberation from this posi-ti-on is necessary. This liberation is more to me, however, than merely a political or ideological affair. Libe-ration also means: freedom to believe in our own way, to have our own thoughts about faith. The notion that the churches -concerning racism- have a dirty past, can lead to incomprehension to the deep religious experience of black women that God helps them to get a better quality of life. On the one side this believe can not be romanticised, on the other side this experience can not be swept off the table as it was only cheap comfort. It is a paradox that religion was meant tot be liberating, but in practise it usually worked out oppressive to women. Nevertheless women often take strength out of religion. To black women the effect of the Christianity is more paradoxical than to white women. Because those who brought them into contact with Christianity, were their oppressors at the same time. I also wondered how it was possible that black people have been able to make Christianity a safe place to themselves. Their discovery signifies that the truth of God does not always coincide with the truth of the established order. On that basis they refuse to be considered as non-human. They refuse to be considered as second-class Christians. It is their discovery that the question of justice is inherent in the Kingdom of God. This book take you on the journey of liberation This liberation is more to us, however, than merely a political or ideological affair. On my journey I proudly declare my self as Daughter of Ham The womanist theology is a recent theological trend, which has emerged from circles of black feminist theologians in the United States and in the Netherlands. The name for this way of practising theology derives from womanism. Womanism is black women's movement, women who see themselves as feminists. The concept 'womanism' has been introduced by Alice Walker, deriving from the word 'womanish'1. This black popular expression is used by mothers towards their Daughters when they are showing extreme behaviour, when they are defiant, enterprising, bold and want to know more than what is thought appropriate or good for them. You can compare the meaning of "Don't be so womanish" with another black popular expression, namely "you trying to be grown". Doreen Hazel
